Earthing is the part of an electrical installation nobody thinks about until it's missing. It doesn't power anything, doesn't turn anything on — its entire job is to give fault current somewhere safe to go instead of through a person or a piece of equipment. That makes it one of the most important wires in the system, not one of the least.
What Earthing Actually Does
When a fault occurs — a live wire touching a metal appliance casing, for example — an earthed system gives that current a low-resistance path back to ground, which trips the protective breaker almost instantly. Without a proper earth connection, that same metal casing can stay live, with no way to trip the circuit until someone touches it and completes the path themselves.

Why Yellow-Green, and Tinned vs. Bare Copper
The yellow-green bi-colour marking is a deliberate, universally recognized convention — it's the one wire in a panel that should never be mistaken for anything else. On conductor choice, tinned copper offers extra corrosion resistance in damp or exposed installations, while bare copper is common in standard indoor panel applications. The right choice depends on where the earthing run is physically located.
Where Proper Earthing Is Required
- Residential panels — protects occupants from fault current in everyday appliances and fixed wiring
- Solar arrays — panel frames and mounting structures need a dedicated earthing path independent of the DC circuit
- Industrial machinery — heavy equipment with metal housings represents a serious shock hazard without it
- Commercial buildings — earthing is also a core part of lightning protection systems, not just fault protection
